Marquette County is in the north-central Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the shore of Lake Superior.
Marquette County was settled in the mid 1800s when iron ore was discovered in Negaunee. The town of Marquette was formally established in 1848 and named for Jacques Marquette, a Jesuit priest and explorer.
